About

Florence Rothenberg

A cardiologist since 2001, I have long been aware of how biases can influence health outcomes. This was first brought to my attention by observing the difficulties of Rita, my dear sister, who suffered from morbid obesity for most of her adult life.

Rita felt shamed by her weight, as well-meaning as her providers may have been. It's only in the past decade or so that we are understanding the biology of obesity. We are learning there are neurohormonal pathways that we all have that make weight loss difficult, making a healthy weight hard to achieve for many.

Rita's weight contributed to heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and all the complications that come from these diseases, as well. She died in 2015 at the young age of 63 from complications of her obesity. Her early death inspired me to study the biology of obesity and its impact on heart disease, and to bring what I have learned to the people I care about, my community.

It is my mission to help you identify your risk factors for heart disease, the number one killer of American women and men, and to use up-to-date medicine to reduce these risks to the best of our ability.
